Trying to be positive here on a Sunday afternoon after a great album release party for my son's new album, "Last Train Home", last night but as soon as I got home last night and turned on the TV I was greeted by the words of the tariff-trash-talking-douchebag who seems to believe that Canada is a major cause of all of the fentanyl deaths and the migration problems in his country?? Which we are not.
I grew up a border kid. We've lived within walking distance of the United States our entire lives. We have relatives in Boston and Lewiston, and dear friends in Pittsburgh, California, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, and more. Many of my favorite singers are American. My sports teams are all American (one even once had the moniker of American's Team...not so much these days) and I have season tickets for the Buffalo Sabres (an arena 3/4 filled by Canadians).
I DJ'd for years in the States, and drank for many more years in the bars in Niagara Falls New York. Still travel to see concerts in Cleveland, New Jersey, New York, Syracuse, Albany, Detroit, and Rochester, and head to Asbury Park every January for Light of Day Winterfest. A home away from home.
Been to Disney a few times, Dallas to see the Cowboys twice. I dreamt about going to Nashville (was supposed to be this April....not now), Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other places that were part of "my romanticized American dream" growing up.
When Barack Obama was elected I was filled with hope that my big brother to the South had finally figured it out and a change was going to come. Well, it did....just not what I was expecting.
Last night I watched TV and a sadness came over me. I always felt I was a bit American - being a border kid. But now this place that I love like a brother has suddenly turned it's back on me....on MY country and you know what they say, "say what you want about me, but don't mess with my family". I kept thinking of all the good peeps that I love down south, the Bordens, the Soles, Jamie/Danny, the LOD family and so many people I care about, including that Bruce guy :)
Then I watched Justin Trudeau speak and I saw a true leader (you don't have to like him or his policies....but last night he stepped up to the plate and he knocked one out of the park for our country). He showed 'actual' leadership. He showed compassion for Canadians and was firm with a commitment to strike back at the bully and impose tariffs right back on him. We won't back down!!!!
I heard other Canadian politicians from different parties talking in a unified tone. Standing up to the bully.
It gave me the hope that Canada is not going to roll over and just let him Annex our country as he mentioned in one of his Sunday morning rants. That's right, he wants to tariff us until they take us over. Did you ever think you would hear these words in our lifetime? Me either.
So now it's time to fight back, we need to unite and we will NOT lose our sovereignty to a sociopath who is not only alienating his country from the rest of the world but also destroying his country and the lives of those who voted for him....now, that's ironic.
I too have been warning people what he was going to do, especially those Canadians who wave his flag and back his so-called "brilliance" even though in his last term he basically said he didn't like us (look it up). Only to hear "lol, what's he going to do us, really?" or my favorite "I wish we had a leader like him to straighten us out". Do ya think the steelworkers or the car manufacturing industry folks in the U.S. are going to feel like he straightened things out when they lose their jobs? How about all the government officials he's gave buy-out letters to, and one week to decide. Hmmmm, I wonder if they think this is the right thing for their country? Can you now see that he is going after Canada, and not only dislikes us but believes 1) they don't need our resources/products, and 2) that we would be better off as a 51st state? I'll move to Italy before that happens.
I was never a beat-my-chest, rah-rah, Canadian patriot. I bitch and moan about taxes like everyone else, but I have always loved this country. Though I admired the romantic picture I had of the States, I never wanted to stay there....just visit. I love my home. I love my country.
Like Justin Trudeau said, "It doesn't have to be this way". I can only dream now of how different things would have been if only Kamala Harris could have (and should have) won. But oh, the price of eggs was too high. Now they are higher. Inflation was coming down....uh, not now. The stock market has been hit, jobs are going to be lost, and businesses closing down. Hmmm, this is what Republicans voted for? Seriously? Come on admit it...you fucked up folks. He duped ya but in doing so he has disrupted things globally. Countries are setting flags and pictures of Trump on fire, spitting on the flag, and my favorite, booing the U.S. national anthem at hockey games...I concur!
I'm sad. But I also think this is the time we show the world the power of TEAM CANADA (and you can have Wayne Gretzky back....we don't want him).
As I said 8 years ago after he won the first time, this is not about parties, this is about good & evil. He was not spared by God to make America great again. They just missed. He's not a Christian. He's a felon. He is evil and I hope for those Trump lovers here in Canada that you finally see what his true intentions are, and he couldn't care less about you or making his country great again.
Sure, things are tough here in Canada. There are a lot of things that I don't like, but now it's going to get worse. It wouldn't have been this way had Kamala won....oh, but you didn't like her....she wasn't qualified? I get it....how could she be as qualified for her job as Pete Hegeseth for his position, or RFK Jr. to run your health department or the other kiss-asses you've appointed to assist in the Project 2025 plan...which by the way is real if you are keeping score at home.
To my friends in the U.S. I send my love and wish you well. I'll be buying Canadian, I'll be drinking Canadian, I'll be traveling in Canada or overseas, but for the time being, I can't see myself wanting to support a country that wants to eliminate its closest ally.
Maybe this will all change.
I pray it will.
In the meantime,
Let's work together
Let's stay together
Let's buy Canadian
Let's show them what Canadians are made of.
